The story

The guan had spent three days rehearsing its humility before the mirror, practicing how to look small without seeming to try. When the acolytes finally entered, they bowed deeply, mistaking its posture for reverence. The guan, terrified of being mistaken for proud, lowered its head further — until its beak touched the stone. It has not moved since. The priests now leave offerings of millet at its feet, whispering that it is the most humble creature to ever grace the temple. The guan, meanwhile, is simply waiting for someone to tell it it can stand up again.

The brief

A lone guan stands perfectly still on a cracked stone floor in a dimly lit, empty temple, its feathers dulled to a washed-out beige, eyes lowered as if apologizing for existing, a single shaft of pale grey light falling across its left wing, casting no shadow.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
