The story

The zebrafish had been told, by a visiting goldfish who claimed to have read it in a book, that it was expected to be strange. It tried, briefly, to swim in spirals, then to stare at its own reflection for ten minutes, but neither felt right. So it settled for floating, slightly askew, and waited. The light changed. The dust moved. Nothing happened. It was, in its own quiet way, exactly as advertised.

The brief

A single zebrafish floats motionless in a shallow glass bowl on a wooden windowsill, its faintly striped body tilted slightly upward as if listening to distant rain, under pale morning light that catches the dust motes and the faint green tinge of algae on the bowl’s inner curve.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
