The story

The zebra arrived at 2:00 PM for an appointment it had forgotten. It sat on the plastic chair until the cardigan became too warm, then stood up to air out its coat. The receptionist did not look up from her computer. Outside, rain blurred the parking lot into a single grey smudge. The zebra stared at a poster of a tropical beach and wondered if the humidity would ruin its hooves. No one called its name. It remained standing in the center of the room, perfectly inoffensive, waiting for a reason to leave or a reason to stay.

The brief

A single zebra stands perfectly still in a beige waiting room. It wears a small, ill-fitting cardigan. Fluorescent lights hum overhead, casting a flat grey glow over the linoleum floor and a stack of outdated magazines on a side table.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
