The story
He arrived seventeen minutes after the agreed time, which in his social circle constituted a calculated affront. The hostess, a retired opera singer with a fondness for marine mammals, said nothing but refilled his glass with a vintage he did not like. He sipped it anyway, adjusting his cufflink with a flipper that had once won a bronze medal in synchronized swimming at the Zurich Aquatic Gala. No one mentioned the tide.
The brief
A sea lion in a charcoal tuxedo stands slightly off-center in a dimly lit Parisian drawing room, one flipper resting on a gilded mantelpiece above a smoldering fireplace, its expression mildly annoyed as late afternoon light slants through tall windows, casting long shadows across a patterned rug and half-empty champagne flutes on a nearby side table.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
