The story

The jerboa had been promoted to Junior Clerk of Sub-subsection B7 after three years of flawless tail-twitching during roll call. It did not understand why the forms required triplicate signatures for acorn allocation, but it filed them anyway, each Tuesday at 3:15 p.m., when the light slanted just so across the linoleum. Its colleagues, a stoic mole and a perpetually sighing shrew, never spoke of the tie. The jerboa suspected it was a test. It had not yet decided whether to pass.

The brief

A small jerboa stands upright on its hind legs in a dim, beige government office, holding a tiny clipboard with one paw while wearing a miniature tie and spectacles, under the harsh glow of a single fluorescent light.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
