The story

The sardine had been left behind during the great office reorganization of 2019, when someone mistook it for a decorative paperweight and placed it near the photocopier. No one noticed it wasn’t paper. Over time, it stopped trying to swim. The fluorescent light hummed above it like a disappointed supervisor. Occasionally, a janitor would mop nearby, pause, shrug, and leave it be. It never moved. It never complained. It just waited, quietly, for someone to remember it was never supposed to be there in the first place.

The brief

A single sardine lies flat on a chipped white tile floor under harsh fluorescent light, its silver scales dulled by dust, one eye slightly open, facing a small puddle of condensation near the base of a bare beige wall.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
