The story

The orca had trained for weeks, memorizing the arc, the timing, the splash. Today, the rubber fish — meant to leap from a hidden chute — had snagged on its tether and hung limp, swaying like a forgotten sock. No applause came. No fish reward. Just the hum of the filter and the slow drift of bubbles rising past its flank. It waited. The fish did not move. The orca blinked once, slowly, and sank a little lower, as if disappointment required submersion. Outside, a child pressed a palm to the glass and yawned.

The brief

An orca floats motionless near the surface of a dimly lit aquarium tank, its dorsal fin slightly askew, eyes half-lidded as it stares at a single, deflated rubber fish bobbing uselessly at the water’s edge, surrounded by muted teal tiles and the faint glow of submerged fluorescents casting long, dull shadows.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
