The story

The crab had waited three tides for the moon to align with the kitchen timer. When the light flicked on, it expected applause, or at least a nod. Instead, the human sighed, wiped their hands on a towel, and walked away. The crab did not move. It had learned disappointment was the only thing that arrived on schedule. It raised its claw again, just in case the human returned to see it trying. They never did.

The brief

A single crab stands motionless on a cracked ceramic plate under a single bare bulb, one claw raised slightly as if mid-gesture, its shell dulled by salt and time, the background a washed-out beige wall with a faint water stain resembling a sigh.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
