The story

The coucal had waited all morning for the mail to arrive, certain today would bring the letter confirming its acceptance into the Avian Society of Discerning Birdwatchers. When the postman slipped nothing through the slot but a coupon for discounted birdseed, it did not cry out or flap. It simply stepped onto the stool, lifted one foot, and stood there, utterly still, as if disappointment were a posture it had learned to hold. The teacup, left by the human who forgot to wash it, remained untouched. The light moved. The coucal did not.

The brief

A coucal stands motionless on a low wooden stool in a sunlit, sparsely furnished room, its feathers slightly ruffled as if caught mid-sigh, one claw lifted slightly off the ground, the afternoon light casting long, pale yellow shadows across the faded green walls and a single chipped teacup on the floor beside it.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
