The Determinedly Mediocre Puffbird
Random inspiration: determinedly mediocre puffbird
AI-generated painting and story
The story
The puffbird had decided, after three years of contemplation, that excellence was overrated. It had applied for promotion twice, been politely declined both times, and now simply adjusted its posture each morning to signal effort without expectation. Today, the light hit just right, making its feathers look almost intentional. No one noticed. It was fine.
The brief
A small, grey-brown puffbird stands motionless on a wooden perch inside a dimly lit attic, one wing slightly raised as if mid-adjustment, surrounded by stacked cardboard boxes labeled 'Misc.' and a single hanging bulb casting a flat, yellowish glow over dust motes and peeling wallpaper.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
