The Contentiously Cosy Roller
Random inspiration: contentiously cosy roller

The story
No one came to claim it after the move. The roller had been left behind not out of forgetfulness, but because its owner, having once tried to skate down the basement stairs and ended up in a heap of laundry and regret, decided it was better off as a monument to cautious ambition. It now waits, not for feet, but for the quiet judgment of time — which, so far, has been kind enough to leave it alone.
The brief
A lone roller skate rests on a worn wooden floor in a dimly lit attic, its wheels slightly askew, one lace frayed and dangling, dust motes suspended in a slant of late afternoon light that catches the faded teal vinyl and chipped chrome, casting long, quiet shadows.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
