The story

The tody had arrived exactly three seconds before the clock struck eight, as it did every morning, and would remain perfectly still until the second hand swept past twelve, at which point it would hop once to the left and wait again. No one had ever seen it blink. The office staff had long since stopped asking why it was there, or how it knew the time. They simply adjusted their schedules to match its silence. Today, as always, it was early. And it was waiting.

The brief

A small green tody bird stands perfectly centered on a minimalist wooden desk, one foot slightly lifted as if mid-step, under the harsh glow of a single overhead fluorescent light that casts no shadows, the walls pale beige and bare except for a digital clock displaying 08:00:00 in red LEDs.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
