The story

The shoveler had been told, by a very serious sparrow who wore spectacles made of bent wire, that today was the day it would finally understand why humans left toast uneaten. It stood there, waiting for revelation, as the toaster clicked off behind it and the kettle began to sing a tune it didn’t recognize. The duck did not move. It had already accepted that the answer would not come. It was cheerful about this. The toast, meanwhile, was slowly absorbing the humidity of the air, becoming slightly less crisp, and slightly more like a metaphor. No one else was home. The shoveler blinked once. Then it blinked again. It did not sigh. It simply waited, as ducks do, for the next thing that would make no sense but feel, somehow, inevitable.

The brief

A lone shoveler duck stands upright in a sunlit, empty kitchen, its feathers slightly ruffled, one webbed foot resting on a chipped ceramic tile, eyes fixed on a half-eaten slice of toast balanced precariously on the edge of the sink, morning light casting long, pale yellow shadows across the linoleum.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
