The story

The skua had been immortal for 317 years, though it never remembered to mention it. It had outlived three lighthouses, two wars, and a particularly persistent seagull that kept trying to steal its chips. Today, it stood on the dock, waiting for the tide to bring something vaguely edible, or perhaps just to see if the sun would finally get tired of shining. It had long since stopped being surprised by anything.

The brief

A lone skua stands motionless on a sun-bleached wooden dock at midday, one wing slightly lifted as if mid-shrug, its feathers dull grey with faint iridescent hints, the sea behind it a flat expanse of washed-out blue under a cloudless sky, the light harsh and even, casting no shadows.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
