The story

The tarsier had been staring at the same crack in the plaster for seventeen minutes when it suddenly remembered it was supposed to be somewhere else. It did not know where, or why it had left, or how it got here. The light shifted. A moth tapped the glass once. The tarsier did not blink. It waited for the feeling to pass, or for someone to explain the rules again. Neither happened. It remained, poised, bewildered, and utterly still, as if the answer might arrive in the next breath—or the one after that.

The brief

A small tarsier with wide, unfocused eyes sits rigidly on a wooden windowsill in a dim, beige-walled room, one paw lifted mid-air as if caught in thought, while late afternoon light slants across faded green wallpaper and casts a long, thin shadow.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
