The Bewildered Skua

The story
The skua had been promised a promotion. Not in rank, but in snacks. It had waited three days by the break room vending machine, convinced the blinking red light meant tuna was imminent. When the sandwich appeared — wrapped in wax paper, labeled 'Turkey & Swiss' — it tilted its head, puzzled. It had never seen turkey. It had never seen Swiss. It blinked slowly. The light buzzed. The sandwich did not move. The skua decided, after careful consideration, that this was a test. It would not eat it. Not yet. It would wait for the instructions. They were coming. They had to be. It sat. And waited. And wondered if the promotion came with a title.
The brief
A single skua stands motionless on a cracked linoleum floor beneath a flickering fluorescent tube, its feathers slightly ruffled, one eye half-closed as if listening to a sound only it can hear, while a half-eaten sandwich sits forgotten on a nearby stool, the room otherwise empty and bathed in the pale greenish glow of institutional light.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
