The Bewildered Axolotl

The story
The axolotl had been told, earlier that morning, that it was not a salamander but a perpetual larva, and since then it had been trying to remember what it was supposed to become. It stared at its reflection, waiting for a sign — a limb to grow, a lung to form, a purpose to emerge. The light changed. The dust settled. It remained, bewildered, unchanged.
The brief
A pale pink axolotl floats motionless in a small glass bowl on a wooden windowsill, its external gills slightly frayed, staring blankly at a reflection of itself in the glass, while late afternoon sunlight slants across the sill, casting long shadows and highlighting dust motes in the air.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
