The story

The spinetail had been waiting for the comet for seventeen years, though it had long since forgotten what a comet looked like. It remembered only that it was supposed to be important, and that it would come when the light hit the wall just so. Every day, it returned to the same sill, tilted its head, and waited. The dust knew its name. The wind, when it came through the crack in the eaves, whispered nothing useful. Today, the light was correct. The bird blinked. Nothing happened. It settled back down, tucked its beak under its wing, and decided to wait for tomorrow instead.

The brief

A small brown spinetail bird perches motionless on the edge of a wooden windowsill in a dimly lit attic, one claw slightly lifted as if mid-thought, surrounded by dust motes drifting in a slant of late afternoon light that catches the faded blue of a peeling wall behind it.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
