The story
The gala started twenty minutes ago, and Barnaby was already failing. He adjusted his bowtie, checked his reflection, and decided the left ear was slightly asymmetrical. He practiced a smile that looked more like a snarl. Outside, the guests waited. Inside, he worried about the lapel and the possibility of a sudden sneeze ruining the silk. He sighed, a low vibration in his chest, and wondered if he could leave without anyone noticing his shoes were untied.
The brief
A caracal wearing a velvet tuxedo stands before a gilded mirror in a dimly lit parlor. Pale green light falls across its anxious expression, illuminating gold wallpaper and a single dropped earring.
The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
