The story

The swan had been invited to tea by the widow who insisted on proper etiquette, and though it had never learned to speak, it had learned to bow. Each afternoon it arrived precisely at three, folded its wings just so, and waited for the cup to be lifted. The widow never drank, but the swan never noticed. It believed politeness was a contract, and it had not yet been released.

The brief

A white swan stands rigidly upright in a sunlit Victorian drawing room, one wing extended in a stiff bow toward a small wooden side table holding a teacup, its expression serene and unblinking under soft golden light filtering through lace curtains, walls papered in faded rose.

The painting and the story were written from this same scene, so the two describe one moment.
